Painting dried poppies in watercolor

This week i wanted to paint somethine darker and moodier than i’m used to. So i choose to paint some dried poppies in a darke blue mist.

I don’t have any particular reference picture for this painting, so I totally rely on my memories ! But it feels like this dried plant is fashionable again as i’m seeing it quite a lot this days !

This picture wasn’t an easy one to paint even though the subject is quite simple. Some of my problems could have been solved by having a reference picture. Memories are totally fine but for more accuracy in texture and feel a picture is necessary. My biggest problem was to render en atmosphere in this painting. The best way to do that is using colors. So i choose prussian blue and perylene red to set the mood but it was quite hard to find the right tone to this mix. My first layer was way too light but it was quite easy to add another layer with a darker color and correct that. When i realised that i knew i was on a good path with this painting.
